SEM Pros Profile: Motoko Hunt

Motoko Hunt
President
AJPR

In 1994, I started to work with Global Strategies providing localization and Japanese web site design services to California-based businesses. Once localized, these sites needed traffic. I began to provide the registration/submission services by submitting the sites to the various Japanese directories, discussion forums and - as they emerged - search engines.

In 1998, I set up AJPR as a consulting company to offer a full-service marketing solution to businesses that want to reach Japan as a market. Specifically, we also help companies understand how to integrate Search Engine Optimization into the localization process to increases their chances of success in Japan. My approach is to not only market their products but also to understand the Japanese consumer, teaching clients to understand the “right way” to do business in Japan.

Especially back in the 90's, it was all a “self-taught” learning process with trial and error. I never forget how excited I was when I saw the pattern in the search results which made me realize the importance of identifying keywords and optimizing pages so that they match the algorithms used by search engines to score pages! I enjoy being in the industry, which is fast paced, constantly evolving, and really changing the way of living globally. Sometimes I, who grew up in a small town in Hiroshima, Japan, still get a kick out of the fact that I'm working with clients in countries which I only knew from music, movies, and novels as a child.
